When a Jew reaches the age of 13, they become bar or bat mitzvah (bet mitzvah is sometimes now used for boys and girls). At that point, it is their responsibility to observe the mitzvot (sacred commandments). To honor that new stage of life, we call them to the Torah for an Aliyah and to chant from the Torah, among the highest honors any Jew can have.
